Descriptive Tasks/Responsibilities for Position

About the Position:
The City of Edmond Detention Facility is located in the downtown area at 100 E. First Street. This Detention Officer's primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and care of inmates during their confinement at the detention facility. Our mission is Trustworthy Service: we work hard to maintain a good relationship with the community and provide a higher degree of service.

Responsibilities:
- Book inmates into the Detention Center
- Check for drugs or weapons and physically restraining inmates/releasing inmates from the Detention Center
- Supervise inmate’s well-being (feeding, showering, checking for health issues, and monitoring)
- Complete fingerprinting for citizens and inmates
- Clean, disinfect, and de-contaminate inmate area
- Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, inmates, and the general public
- Maintain self-control and composure to act professionally when dealing with difficult individuals or situations

Requirements

Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- 12 to 18 months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience with operating computers and typing
- Willingness to work shift work (current shifts are 7 am to 3 pm, 3 pm to 11 pm, and 11 pm to 7 am)
- Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier

Necessary Abilities:
- Ability to learn new software systems
- Ability to react quickly in an emergency
- Ability to make sound rational decisions and demonstrate good judgement
- Ability to meet required physical standards for this position, as in subduing a prisoner
- Ability to interpret applicable laws, ordinances, & regulations
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and recognize actual and potential danger
- Ability to follow procedures, practices, and safety rules
- Ability to adapt quickly to changes in scheduling to work call-backs and overtime
- Ability to pass an extensive background investigation, dummy drag, psychological test, polygraph, and drug/physical screenings
